Why Does Your Tailbone Hurt After Long Hours Of Sitting?

 



Have you ever finished a long day at your desk, a long drive, or several hours of studying and noticed pain right at the bottom of your spine? If so, you are not alone. Tailbone pain, also known as coccydynia, can develop or become worse after prolonged sitting, particularly when sitting on a hard surface or maintaining a poor sitting position for extended periods.

 The good news is that tailbone pain is often manageable with simple changes to your sitting habits, movement, and posture. However, persistent or severe pain should not be ignored.

 



What is the Tailbone?

The tailbone, medically called the coccyx, is the small bone at the very bottom of your spine. It is made up of several small vertebrae that are usually fused together. Although it is small, the coccyx plays an important role in supporting the body while sitting and provides attachment points for several muscles and ligaments. Because the tailbone helps support your weight while sitting, prolonged pressure on this area can sometimes cause irritation and pain.

 



Why Does Sitting for Long Hours Cause Tailbone Pain?

1. Prolonged Pressure on the Coccyx

When you sit for several hours without changing position, your body continuously places pressure on the tissues around the tailbone. This can be particularly uncomfortable when sitting on a hard chair or surface.

Long periods of sitting are recognized as a possible cause of tailbone pain, especially when combined with poor posture or repetitive strain.

2. Poor Sitting Posture

Slouching can change the position of your pelvis and increase pressure around the coccyx. Sitting without adequate lower-back support may also make it harder to distribute your body weight comfortably.

Maintaining a supported, comfortable sitting position can help reduce unnecessary pressure on the tailbone.

3. Sitting on Hard Surfaces

Hard chairs provide less cushioning around the coccyx. If you regularly work, study, drive, or travel on a firm seat for hours, the repeated pressure may contribute to discomfort.

4. Previous Injury

Tailbone pain does not always begin with sitting. A previous fall, direct impact, cycling injury, or other trauma can bruise, fracture, or irritate the coccyx. Sitting for a long time may then make an existing problem more noticeable.

5. Changes Around the Pelvis

Pregnancy and childbirth can place additional stress on the muscles and ligaments surrounding the coccyx. Differences in body weight, joint mobility, and pelvic muscle function can also contribute to tailbone pain.

 


What Does Tailbone Pain Feel Like?

Coccydynia may feel like a dull, aching tenderness at the base of the spine, although some people experience sharper or more intense pain.

You may notice that the pain becomes worse when:

·         Sitting for a prolonged period

·         Sitting down or standing up

·         Bending forward

·         Sitting on a hard surface

·         Having a bowel movement

Some people may also find that the discomfort interferes with sleep or everyday activities.

 


How Can You Reduce Tailbone Pain?

Small changes to your daily routine can make sitting more comfortable.

Take regular movement breaks: Avoid remaining seated for long uninterrupted periods. Stand up, walk around, and change position regularly.

Improve your sitting posture: Keep your lower back supported and avoid prolonged slouching. Your goal should be a comfortable position that distributes pressure rather than concentrating it around the coccyx.

Use a coccyx cushion: A specially designed coccyx cushion can reduce pressure on the tailbone while sitting.

Avoid prolonged sitting on hard surfaces: If possible, choose a supportive seat and change positions frequently.

Try heat or cold: Depending on what feels more comfortable, a wrapped ice pack or heat pack may help relieve symptoms.

Stay gently active: Complete rest is not always necessary. Gentle movement can help prevent stiffness, while activities that significantly increase pain should be modified.

 


Can Physiotherapy Help Tailbone Pain?

Yes. Physiotherapy can be part of the treatment for persistent coccydynia. A physiotherapist can assess your posture, movement patterns, pelvic and surrounding muscle function, and the factors that may be contributing to your symptoms.

 Treatment may include appropriate exercises, posture and activity modifications, manual techniques, and guidance on reducing pressure on the coccyx. NHS guidance lists physiotherapy among treatment options when simple self-care measures have not been enough.

 Importantly, treatment should be individualized. The right exercises for one person may not be appropriate for another, particularly when pain followed an injury or is associated with other symptoms.

 


When Should You See a Physiotherapist?

Tailbone pain often improves over time, but you should seek professional assessment if it continues for several weeks, affects your daily activities, or keeps returning.

You should also seek medical advice if the pain follows a significant fall or injury, or if it occurs alongside symptoms such as fever or pain in other areas. Rarely, persistent tailbone pain can have causes other than mechanical strain, so ongoing symptoms deserve proper evaluation.

Tailbone pain after long hours of sitting is often related to prolonged pressure, poor posture, hard seating, or repetitive strain. It doesn't necessarily mean that something is seriously wrong, but persistent pain shouldn't simply be accepted as part of having a desk job or spending long hours driving.

Taking regular movement breaks, improving your sitting setup, using appropriate cushioning, and getting professional assessment when needed can help you return to comfortable sitting and normal daily activities.
